Head of Antitrust, Europe

Trevor Soames is head of the European Antitrust practice and joint managing partner of Howrey’s Brussels office, where he practices EU and Member State antitrust/competition and regulatory law. Together with his substantial team of experienced lawyers and economists, Trevor specializes in complex cases covering the whole range of antitrust including mergers, monopolization (dominance) and cartel investigations in Europe and the USA.

Trevor has worked with many of the world’s largest corporations across a wide range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, aviation, beverages, biotechnology, broadcasting, chemicals, consumer products, defense, energy, forest products manufacturing, packaging, telecommunications and shipping. 

An experienced advocate, he appears before the agencies and the European/national courts. Regularly published and a frequent conference speaker, Trevor is qualified as both a Barrister and a Solicitor-Advocate and is recognized in all the principal directories as one of the leading EC competition and antitrust lawyers.

Representative Highlights

  • Qualcomm Inc. Howrey represents Qualcomm Inc. in connection with six coordinated complaints before the European Commission. These complaints allege that Qualcomm has abused a dominant position by engaging in a number of practices relating to the licensing of wireless telecommunications technology and the sale of chipsets. In addition, Howrey is involved in all the antitrust issues arising in IP enforcement litigation in many jurisdictions (2005–present).
  • United Airlines. Has acted for United Airlines as competition counsel since 1998. Non-confidential matters include the European Commission's investigation of United Airlines' proposed acquisition of US Airways, United Airlines' strategic alliance arrangements with Lufthansa, SAS and bmi british midland and, most recently, the Commission’s investigation of the alleged air cargo cartel (1998–present).
  • GE v. Commission, Honeywell v. Commission. Successfully intervened to support the Commission's merger prohibition decision on behalf of Rockwell Collins in the Court of First Instance. The Court upheld the Commission's decision to prohibit the merger (2004–2005).
