Areas of Focus

Securities Litigation, Government Enforcement & White Collar Defense

Accountant and Professional Liability

With more than 25 years of experience in representing major accounting firms and law firms, Howrey attorneys have successfully defended auditors and lawyers in malpractice and class action securities fraud actions, bankruptcy trustee litigation and government investigations.

FCPA Investigations

Our team includes the former chief of the DOJ Fraud Section and two former Fraud Section attorneys. We have counseled and represented individuals and public companies on both the accounting and anti-bribery provisions of the act in many areas of the world, including Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean and South America.

Government Contracts

We provide government contract services with focused counseling and advocacy, backed by a preeminent global litigation practice. Our attorneys regularly appear in the legal forums that address government contracts issues, including the US Court of Federal Claims, the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the US Court of Federal Claims, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Boards of Contract Appeals and state and federal courts across the US.

Securities Class Actions and Shareholder Derivative Cases

We have successfully litigated dozens of class actions against the best known and most experienced plaintiffs' lawyers and have represented officers and directors in putative class actions and derivative actions in state and federal courts throughout the US.

SEC and Regulatory Enforcement

With our central office located in the District of Columbia, Howrey's lawyers have developed a skilled working knowledge of the SEC and other federal agencies, close working relationships with the staffs and key decision-makers at those agencies, and a high degree of credibility. From that experience we have grown our base of knowledge and experience to encompass governmental agencies and offices around the world – from Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Irvine, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and throughout Europe.

Special Committee Representations and Internal Investigations

We represent audit committees, special board committees, government contractors, independent directors, boards of directors and corporations in complex, often highly sensitive internal investigations. We understand the importance of maintaining true independence in connection with internal investigations of this type, and at the same time recognize the need to work cooperatively and effectively with in-house counsel and a company's regular outside attorneys.

White Collar Criminal Defense

We understand the consequences, both to reputation and to the bottom-line, that can arise from criminal or regulatory investigations. We work to resolve disputes as expeditiously as possible, seeking to craft creative resolutions of threatened or pending enforcement actions at the earliest opportunity. We work diligently to protect the attorney-client privilege and related privileges, all in an effort to maintain our clients' rights and privacy.
