Howrey’s Chicago Office Named “Pro Bono Law Firm of The Year”

Chicago, IL, July 25, 2008….The Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights under The Law has recognized several Howrey lawyers and staff for their exceptional hard work, leadership and dedication in promoting equal access to justice in Illinois. Because of their work, Howrey has been designated “Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year.” Partners Steve Libowsky, Todd McLawhorn, Ken Kliebard, Associate Abigail Peluso, and Paralegals Elsa Doi, Wendy Dickman, Martha Calvo and Michelle Vaught all contributed to the work that led to the recognition.
“This is a significant honor,” said David Clough, Managing Partner of Howrey’s Chicago office. “We have a dedicated group of attorneys and staff who have worked together and continue to work together on a range of cutting edge civil rights cases through the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights under the Law to bring justice to those whose civil rights have been violated. In its annual Pro Bono Report, leaders of the firm stated that “being an attorney means being able to provide clients with access to justice.” In 2007, Howrey devoted more than 59,811 hours to pro bono matters on behalf of more than 350 clients-an increase in hours of 32% over 2006.
Partnering with various legal services providers in cities where Howrey has a presence, the firm has represented a significant number of clients who otherwise would not have had access to the legal system. “Giving back to the community is one of the responsibilities and the privileges of practicing law,” Clough added.
