Chambers USA Gives Howrey’s Insurance Recovery Practice High Marks

07/23/2008

Extensive Peer and Client Research Determines Results

Howrey LLP is pleased to report that its Insurance Recovery Group- (Policy Holder practice) and several of its lawyers were ranked significantly by Chambers USA 2008 on a national and regional scale. Chambers rankings are a result of extensive interviews done by highly qualified researchers with clients of the firm and peers of individual lawyers and firms. Firms and lawyers ranked have been determined to be leaders in the field.

Chambers noted that Howrey’s insurance recovery practice received national ratings by clients who stated that the teams “lawyers are flexible, organized, and able to grasp the complexities of a case at an astonishing speed.”  Chambers also found through its research that the practice’s depth is a main factor in its success.  The group “has all the resources needed - you never have to worry that you’ll miss a deadline or that the work will be anything but excellent,” stated one client.  The group, however, is made up of some of the industry’s most talented lawyers:
Clients of practice Co-chair David W. Steuber, Nationally ranked- first tier; California ranked- first tier, are highly impressed with his technique because he is a lawyer who “emphasizes common sense, is analytically brilliant and offers quality service,” according toe Chambers. Steuber, the report added is highly respected by adversaries who refer to him as thoughtful, top-notch lawyer who has achieved tremendous success.”  Indeed, he is a “top-tier, first-rate lawyer,” and is “one of the pioneers in California for insurance recovery work,” added another client. Insurance Recovery partner Tyrone R. Childress, also based in Howrey’s California offices is said by clients to be the lawyer to turn to with challenging insurance recovery matters.  He is “an excellent choice for the trickier insurance matters,” clients added.  He is “an attorney who "truly understands the issues.”

Howrey’s already formidable Insurance Recovery increased in breadth and depth with the arrival of Co-chair and Partner Jill B. Berkeley to the group in 2006. Berkeley, located in the Chicago office, had a national reputation in the field prior to joining Howrey and continues to enjoy an exemplary reputation. Chambers research found that she is “well recommended by her peers.”  Clients too, commends that, she is “highly distinguished in her field, and can be relied upon to provide sound advice on a wide variety of matters to a tight deadline.”

Robert Shulman in the D.C. office also received national rankings that stemmed from remarks by his peers who stated that he is “the first person I’d call if I couldn’t do a case.”  Shulman is also Co-Chair of the Insurance Recovery practice and is praised by clients, according to Chambers, for his strategic thinking. “He’s very creative, and is always coming up with great ideas.”
Howrey has a thriving Insurance Recovery practice across the firm. Evidence of that fact is the number of lawyers who have been rated by Chambers and clients.

Also based in California Mary Craig Calkins was touted by clients saying that she is “detail-oriented, incredibly client-dedicated and easy to work with,” and clients benefit from her “superb negotiation skills and ability to resolve cases.” Clients describe Partner Curtis D. Porterfield as “Creative and smart,” handling insurance recovery litigation as well as policy advice and negotiation.

Howrey’s Insurance Recovery have always been well-regarded by Fortune 500 and Global 500 companies. To date, through successful pre-litigation claims advocacy, litigation and trial, Howrey has recovered billions of dollars for our clients.
