Leading Antitrust Lawyer brings Government and Firm Experience to Howrey

Washington, D. C. July 9, 2009…Howrey LLP announced today that MJ Moltenbrey, a highly respected antitrust practitioner, will join the firm’s Antitrust Practice Group, as a partner, effective July 13. MJ joins Howrey from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Washington.

“We are pleased to add a lawyer of MJ’s caliber to our antitrust practice,’ said Robert F. Ruyak, Chairman and CEO of Howrey. “She is someone we have known and respected for years. MJ joins us at a time when our firm, and especially our antitrust/competition practice, is flourishing both in the United States and Europe and has frequently been called into large transnational matters. She has a wealth of experience in private as well as governmental practice and we are delighted and excited that we can now call her our partner.”

MJ started her career as a trial attorney in the Antitrust Division at the US Department of Justice. She served as Chief of the Civil Task Force, and then Director of Civil Non-Merger Enforcement. In that capacity, she was the Antitrust Division’s senior career official responsible for civil conduct investigations and litigation. During her 17 year DOJ career, MJ worked on several high profile and challenging matters, including the government’s cases against Microsoft, United and USAir, and Visa and MasterCard.

She was recently profiled by Global Competition Review in their “Women in Antitrust” feature, which highlights the careers and challenges of the world’s leading women antitrust lawyers.

MJ represents clients before the DOJ and FTC and in federal courts on mergers, civil and criminal conduct matters, and administrative proceedings. She focuses on the mining, biotechnology and transportation industries, as well as joint ventures and the intersection of the antitrust and intellectual property laws. She is also highly skilled in representing clients in dominant firm matters.

Sean Boland, co-chair of Howrey’s Antitrust practice, noted the strength of the firm’s Antitrust and Competition bench on both sides of the Atlantic. “Howrey has been known for more than fifty years as an antitrust powerhouse within the United States but over the last seven years our European offices have enabled Howrey to become one of the top competition firms in Europe as well. MJ’s credentials and reputation help us to continue to reinforce that excellence worldwide.”

MJ added, “I have been fortunate to have worked closely with many lawyers at Howrey in the past, both during my time in the government and since I have been in private practice. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to work with them again as part of such a talented and well-respected antitrust practice.”

MJ received her JD magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from Boston College Law School in 1984 and her BA magna cum laude from Boston College in 1981.
