Howrey Tops Law360’s Competition Practice Ranking

12/10/2009

“Howrey LLP's impressive record of success in competition litigation keeps clients coming back, allowing the firm's competition group to continue to grow and prosper,” says Law 360.

Washington, DC, December 10, 2009…Howrey has ranked number one in Law360’s Competition 100, the annual survey identifying the largest US antitrust practice groups. With 235 attorneys doing competition work, Howrey tops Law 360’s 2009 list of the largest competition practices in the US. Howrey also has the highest percentage (40 percent) of antitrust attorneys among firms with 100 or more attorneys.

“Its secret to success?” asks Law360. “Win,” said Sean Boland, one of three practice group heads. “Winning is extremely important to the growth and success of the practice…When you win, that begets new pieces of litigation,” Boland noted.

In Boland’s opinion, Howrey’s trans-Atlantic competence is also an important factor in attracting clients. “You’ve got many firms that have a very good US practice or a very good European practice. We have excellent ones in both, and that’s a tremendous advantage to us,” he said. Howrey has competition attorneys in Washington, Brussels, New York and London as well as some of its West Coast offices and just added a well-respected competition team, headed by Clause Lazarus, in the firm’s Paris office.

Howrey’s antitrust team is multi-talented. The group prides itself on its litigation expertise and estimates that it is involved in as much as 35 percent of all antitrust class actions. The group has a strong mergers and acquisitions practice, as well as cartel and counseling experts.

Earlier this year, Global Competition Review named Howrey one of the world’s top competition practices, an honor the firm has enjoyed since the inception of the GCR 100 survey. The firm was named the largest worldwide antitrust/competition practice; singled out as attracting the highest number of lateral partners; and listed as one of the world’s “Elite 20.”

“We earned this recognition by hard work, attention to clients’ needs, and expertise, and we do not take any of it for granted,” co-chair Alan Wiseman said. “I join Sean and Trevor Soames in Brussels in congratulating everyone at Howrey who had a hand in contributing to this recognition of our antitrust practice. We look forward to an equally strong 2010.”
