Washington DC, July 15, 2009… Howrey is pleased to announce that its partner Paul Cuomo has been named to the National Law Journal/Legal Times “40 Under 40.” Paul, located in the Washington DC office, is a member of the firm’s Global Antitrust practice. He will be officially honored during a 2009 Legal Times Gala on October 7, 2009, at the Ritz-Carlton.
Lawyers named to the list of “40 Under 40” are “Washington-area lawyers who will play a major role in the legal community of the nation's capital—and therefore of the nation—for years to come,” according to the published report. The report continues, “As a one-time Federal Trade Commission attorney . . . the Howrey partner puts his experience to work advising Fortune 500 companies on multibillion-dollar deals.”
Paul has distinguished himself as an extremely talented lawyer in the antitrust field by his successful representation of some of the largest companies in the world, including serving as Imperial Chemical Industries’ lead U.S. antitrust counsel in connection with the $16 billion acquisition of ICI by Akzo Nobel and subsequent $5 billion sale of certain ICI businesses to Henkel A.G. & Co.; representing Caterpillar in connection with various transactions; representing A.O. Smith Corporation in its acquisitions of GSW Inc./American Water Heater and State Industries; and representing a number of oilfield equipment and service companies including Cameron International, Baker Hughes, Acergy (formerly Stolt Offshore), Newpark Resources and others. Paul has represented many other companies across a wide variety of industries in dozens of public and non-public transactions. In addition to working with clients to secure U.S. and international antitrust clearances for their mergers and acquisitions, Paul has represented parties in opposition to transactions and he provides risk arbitrage advice.
Mr. Cuomo also has significant experience outside of the merger arena. For example, he was recently appointed by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) to serve as its Antitrust Compliance Officer under the terms of a settlement agreement with the FTC, he represents companies in civil non-merger and criminal investigations and he provides day-to-day antitrust advice to numerous clients across a wide range of industries, including heavy industrial equipment, consumer goods and the generation and distribution of electric and natural gas.
“Nobody deserves this honor more than Paul. He is a magnificent antitrust lawyer and has accomplished significantly for our clients and the practice,” said Antitrust Co-Chairman Sean Boland.
This is the second recognition of Paul’s accomplishments by a leading legal publication. In 2008, Paul was named to Global Competition Review’s “40 Under 40,” a list of the world’s leading antitrust lawyers under the age of 40. He was selected after a lengthy due diligence process in which GCR received input from antitrust practitioners on over 1,000 nominees around the world.
