Our Law Firm

Pro Bono

Justice for All

The hours spent by Howrey attorneys on pro bono matters are counted the same as if they were spent on fee-generating cases. In 2008, we devoted over 75,000 hours to pro bono matters on behalf of more than 450 clients. These services are valued at $27.8 million.

There is a responsibility that attaches to the legal profession: to serve the cause of justice for all, not only for those who can afford it. We recognize that, as attorneys and as a firm, we have an obligation to our community and to the administration of equal justice to provide pro bono representation to those who cannot afford it. Howrey has always held a strong commitment to providing legal representation to those who would otherwise be denied access to justice.

Howrey’s Total Commitment

Howrey treats every pro bono client with the same respect, diligence and zealous advocacy we give to all of our clients. The hours spent by Howrey attorneys on pro bono matters are counted the same as if they were spent on fee-generating cases. In 2008, we devoted over 75,000 hours to pro bono matters on behalf of more than 450 clients. These services are valued at $27.8 million.
Through partnerships with the numerous legal services providers in our cities, we represented low-income clients who were fighting to preserve what many take for granted: their homes, their jobs, their health and their families. Our attorneys also worked on larger-scale cases that could impact the rights of thousands of people. We are proud to be among the original law firms to support the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, which calls on law firms to devote a percentage of their billable hours every year to pro bono matters.
“I have an irrepressible desire to live till I can be assured that the world is a little better for my having lived in it.” – Abraham Lincoln

Faith in the Justice System

In all of these cases, our goal is to provide our clients with the highest-quality representation. Often our clients emerge from these cases with their rights affirmed, their voices heard and their faith in the justice system renewed. At the same time, our attorneys and staff also gain from these experiences the ability to work one-on-one with a client whose basic livelihood is at stake; the chance to advocate on his or her behalf before some of the most esteemed tribunals in the land; and a deeper understanding of the obligation legal professionals have to our communities. We continue to work tirelessly to improve our communities and provide our clients with meaningful access to justice.
