“The US Department of Justice’s antitrust division has asked agricultural biotechnology company Monsanto for information on its soya bean traits business, the company announced yesterday. Monsanto makes agricultural products, including genetically modified seeds and beans, and animal growth hormones.”
“The authority is investigating allegations that Monsanto is trying to limit access to its first generation Roundup Ready soya bean trait, a modification that allows soya beans to withstand herbicides, to push them into buying more expensive traits after Roundup Ready’s patent expires in 2014.”
“Monsanto says it stated in November last year that farmers and seed companies will continue to have access to the first-generation version of Roundup Ready after the patent expires. It adds that the company is cooperating with the DOJ’s inquiries.”
“Howrey LLP Partner MJ Moltenbrey in Washington, DC, is counsel to Monsanto.”
