Co-Chair, Antitrust

Mr. Boland is Co-Chair of the firm’s Antitrust practice, the largest private antitrust practice in the world, and specializes in representing companies before the US and international antitrust enforcement agencies. His areas of expertise include mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, intellectual property and transnational antitrust. He has also represented large and small companies in criminal antitrust proceedings and in complex civil antitrust litigation.

Mr. Boland has been recognized as a leading international competition lawyer in numerous publications including Chambers USA, The Legal 500, Global Competition Review, Expert Guides and Washingtonian magazine. He was also selected as a "2007 BTI Transaction All-Star" by the BTI Consulting Group for superior client service.

Mr. Boland has guided numerous mergers and acquisitions, in a broad range of industries, through the federal and foreign antitrust review process. He is an expert in drafting and negotiating acquisition agreements and handling contested transactions through premerger second requests and consent order proceedings at both the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice. He has represented clients in various high-tech industries including healthcare, oil and gas production and drilling, basic metals and chemicals, heavy manufacturing, regulated industries, transportation and financial services. Among others, Mr. Boland has represented Baker Hughes Incorporated; Cooper Industries, Inc.; Caterpillar, Inc.; National Oilwell Varco; Harley-Davidson Motor Company; Reynolds Metals Company; Procter & Gamble; York International; A.O. Additionally, Mr. Boland has served as lead defense counsel in complex criminal and civil litigation involving the trucking, petroleum drill bit, hand tool, office products, outdoor advertising and fluid milk industries. He has also engineered creative settlements in various litigation proceedings as well as in the mergers and acquisitions area.

  • Merger of National-Oilwell, Inc. and Varco International, Inc. Manufacturers of critical capital drilling equipment for onshore and offshore rigs. Represented both merging parties.
  • Acquisition of York International by Johnson Controls, Inc. HVAC equipment and controls. Represented York International.
