Howrey is unique among global law firms as we focus on complex litigation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) as a principal practice area. Howrey attorneys utilize the full spectrum of ADR techniques to further a client's business objectives when litigation doesn’t make economic or political sense, or is simply not the most appropriate course of action.

ADR allows for creative solutions that can result in a confidential, timely and effective outcome for both parties. However, when a client's business objectives are not furthered by ADR or negotiations reach an impasse, we do not shrink from the challenge of trying a case in court. Our reputation as trial attorneys and our willingness to go to court can help to strengthen a client's position and promote a favorable settlement.

Our attorneys are experienced in all types of proceedings, whether held:

  • Under the rules of arbitral institutions, such as the Court of Arbitration at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the American Arbitration Association (AAA), the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the Chambers of Commerce of Switzerland, Stockholm or Vienna, and the Chinese International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC)
  • Under the auspices of the International Convention for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID)
  • Before specialist trade associations (such as the London Metal Exchange and GAFTA)
  • On an ad hoc basis, under the local arbitration laws of a range of jurisdictions
In addition to traditional arbitration sectors like maritime and construction, we also have experience in bilateral investment treaty arbitrations (ICSID), particularly in expropriation, energy and telecommunications matters, and are on the forefront of emerging issues, such as arbitrating competition and product liability matters.
